Get your glow on! How to naturally look and feel your best on your elopement/wedding day.

Let’s talk about holistically inspired beauty care for your big wedding day or elopement on Martha’s Vineyard (or anywhere your spirit moves you to wed). We all want to feel and look our best and especially on our wedding day! With a few tips you can recharge your body and restore moisture and glow inside and out.

While officiating and writing your original Love Story as a ceremony, on the Island of Martha’s Vineyard, is one of my passions, so is discovering holistic remedies for health and natural beauty.  I have always loved alchemy! I love mixing organic raw foods and essential oils to create face masks, natural cleansers and aromatherapy.

“Honey, honey oh how I love you! Give it to me raw, organic and straight. Your skin will love you back when you ditch the expensive, and often toxic, cleansers and moisturizers.”

So as long as your products are edible, or pure such as yummy honey, you truly can’t go wrong - unless you have an allergy.  So do be careful about that! (More on allergies below!)

Honey, honey oh how I love you! Give it to me raw, organic and straight. Your skin will love you back when you ditch the expensive, and often toxic, cleansers and moisturizers. Honey will hydrate, gently cleanse, with its natural antibiotic properties, and exfoliate your skin, without harsh chemicals and additives.  On Martha’s Vineyard you can find raw honey, locally and lovingly, made by Island Bee Company.

It is amazing how food allergies can go undetected even with the gluten free craze because so many people do not realize it is a real thing.  Even just a slight dairy or wheat allergy can mess up your stomach, create brain fog and fatigue and show up on your skin.

So my advice, even if you do not know if you have a food allergy, is try eliminating gluten and dairy for a week and see how you feel! Be careful though because it is amazing how many products they sneak gluten into.  I had to become an ingredient junky - checking every single ingredient on everything - even sauces, soy sauce and mustard.  Eating whole and unprocessed foods is your safest bet.

Now dare I say - try to also eliminate sugar (especially cane syrup) - unless using raw sugar as a natural exfoliant - and I promise after just a few days you will notice the brain fog lifting, the bloat disappearing and your skin beginning to glow. Drink plenty of water as well.

Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!  Squeeze a bit of lemon into your water or slice an organic cucumber into your water to create a powerful hydrating beverage.  You might even shed a few pounds as your body thanks you for ridding it of difficult to digest foods and for saying goodbye to processed sugar.

Now let’s get back to pampering your skin. Following your honey cleanser, which is best applied to a steamed face in the shower, gently apply a cotton pad with sesame oil, pure aloe juice and witch hazel to wash away any excess honey on your skin and especially along the hairline of your face. Amazingly honey does not apply sticky to damp skin at all but will feel sticky later if not fully rinsed away.

Honey actually goes on smoothly or with a slight exfoliation effect when applying a honey with soft granules. I like to mix it up and keep several jars of different kinds of raw honey in the shower. I have a sampling of smooth whipped consistency honey, honey with small granules for exfoliating and simple raw honey that changes consistency over time. Be sure to exfoliate your damp lips as well with the granulated honey or raw brown sugar.

Following my honey wash and my light witch hazel /aloe/sesame seed oil cleanse, I further hydrate my skin with natural serum blends from Living Bliss Herbs or I use pure organic oils. Sesame and coconut oil are my two favorites as they easily absorb into the skin leaving your face feeling hydrated and smooth.

Organic extra virgin coconut oil has powerful natural antibiotic properties (as does the honey), is a wonderful moisturizer and smells heavenly. I love to bathe my entire body in this luscious wonder.

Now how about those pearly whites? I love making my own tooth polish and you can have fun just experimenting. I mix baking soda, essential oil of peppermint, coconut oil, and xylitol for a cleansing, whitening experience. Experiment with measurements until you have the right consistency with the coconut oil and baking soda. Then blend in just a few drops of your essential oil. Xylitol adds sugar free sweetness and is a natural antibiotic for your teeth.  I keep a larger batch in the fridge for freshness and refill a smaller jar for the bathroom.

Baking soda and coconut oil also make for a natural deodorant. The coconut oil adds antibacterial hydration, scent and smoothness while the baking soda absorbs perspiration and odor.

Of course always use pure organic products whenever possible. My motto is - if you can’t eat it - you likely should not apply it to your skin! Our skin is like a sponge after-all so let’s treat it gently.

Your shower filter might be a good place to start as well.  We absorb a large amount of toxins through the steam.  We often filter our drinking water but filtering the shower water is just as vital.  Your hair and skin will feel and show the difference in just a few weeks! I like the Berkey water filtration systems but there are many out there so just do a little research to see what works for you.

Taking the time to give yourself the holistic nourishment you need can make all the difference in your overall well being and help you feel especially amazing on your wedding day and beyond.

Holistic remedies for health and beauty are my passion. With a little inspiration, you too, can become a natural beauty alchemist.
